Silent Impressions

Michael Kenna, one of the greatest black & white landscape photographers’ of his generation, has a vision which is unmistakably his trademark.

Kenna photographs from dusk till dawn, capturing what is otherwise impossible for the human eye to see. He is immensely intrigued by the movement of earth, water, mist, fog and clouds which are always moving, transforming in a somewhat uncontrollable infinite journey.

Silent Impressions are being exhibited in Elipsis Art Gallery,in Cukurcuma, Beyoglu,which is situated on the European side of Istanbul.He invites us to meditate in an almost zen-like atmosphere in his photography. The contrast between man-made and the natural, more intimate, serene and tranquil landscapes is captured in a dream like print. Even in the city that never sleeps; New York, seems no different than the mystical presence in Japan or China. He captures a dim soft light that creates shadows which contains many secrets which draws us in. He may well be trying to simplify and slow down this fast paced chaotic world we live in, and it is the inner conversation between him and the subject matter where we witness his silent impressions.

Michael Kenna’s solo exhibitions take place throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States. Kenna's exquisitely crafted prints are included in permanent museum collections such as The National Gallery, Washington, D.C., The Biblioteque Nationale, Paris, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, Japan, The Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
